The (Goat) Cheese Stands Alone!

You could say we know a thing or two about goat cheeses.

Surfing Goat Dairy, a family-owned goat farm located in Kula on the majestic island of Maui, has been producing several award-winning cheeses since 2002. Our farm has quickly become a must-visit destination for tourists and locals alike, thanks to all those delicious cheeses, our fun farm tours, and commitment to sustainable and humane farming practices.

What sets Surfing Goat Dairy apart from other cheese producers is not only the picturesque location, but our cheese-making process itself!. The farm uses a unique blend of French and Hawaiian cheese-making techniques to produce a wide variety of goat cheeses, from fresh chèvre to tangy feta, all of which have won numerous awards over the years throughout the country, and awarded by some serious cheese-mongers to boot.

In 2013, we was awarded first place in the “American Originals – Soft, Fresh Cheese” category at the prestigious American Cheese Society competition for our SGD Maui Farmstead Chèvre, and in 2014, we received a “Gold Award” from the World Cheese Awards for the Upcountry Truffle cheese.

But don’t think the success of our farm is strictly owed to our delicious cheeses—we’ve got to thank the goats! Indeed, the goats at Surfing Goat Dairy are pasture-raised, which means they are allowed to graze freely on the farm’s lush pastures, which not only leads to healthier and happier goats but also results in better-tasting cheese. The farm also uses solar power to help reduce its carbon footprint and recycle water to reduce its water usage.

Visitors to Surfing Goat Dairy can experience firsthand the farm’s cheese-making process and meet the goats that produce the milk for their delicious cheeses. The farm offers a range of tours, from a self-guided tour to a “Grand Dairy Tour” that includes a behind-the-scenes look at the farm, the chance to participate in the milking process, and a cheese-making class. The farm’s cheese shop is another must-visit destination where visitors can sample and purchase a wide variety of cheeses, including some that are only available on the farm, as well as locally made products such as goat milk soap, lotion, honey, and jam. Visitors can also enjoy a cheese plate, a cup of coffee, or a refreshing smoothie made with fresh goat milk at the farm’s shop.

Surfing Goat Dairy is more than just a cheese producer: we’re a key player in the national cheese-making scene, in addition to a must-see destination for locals and visitors alike. Stop on by and say aloha the next time you’re upcountry!
