A Day in the Life (of a Goat) at Surfing Goat Dairy

At Surfing Goat Dairy the stars of the proverbial show are undoubtedly the goats. With over 100 goats on our farm in Kula there’s never a dull moment as these playful and curious creatures go about their daily routines—and today we’d like to give you a sneak peek as to what exactly that entails!

A typical day for a goat at Surfing Goat Dairy begins early in the morning, when the sun rises over the lush green pastures that stretch out as far as the eye can see in the Upcountry region. As the goats awaken from their slumber, they begin to stir and stretch, eager to start their day among the slopes of mighty Haleakala.

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that goes double for goats! Our friends and colleagues are fed a diet of fresh alfalfa hay, along with a special grain blend that provides all the nutrients they need to stay healthy and happy. As the goats chow down on their morning meal, the farm staff begins to go about their daily tasks, from milking the goats to cleaning the pens and tending to the fields (preparation is the key to success, dont’cha know).

Milking the goats is a key part of the daily routine at Surfing Goat Dairy, of course, so the goats are milked twice a day, every day, to ensure that they produce enough milk for their health—and to make the farm’s delicious array of cheeses! Each goat produces an average of about one quart of milk per day, which is collected and stored in the farm’s state-of-the-art milk room to be turned into several tantalizing concoctions.

After milking, the goats are free to roam the pastures and explore the farm to their heart’s content, as one does. Some goats love to climb and play on the rocks and structures in the fields, while others prefer to graze on the grass or relax in the shade of a tree. Visitors to the farm are often charmed by the goats’ playful antics and friendly personalities, which make them a joy to be around for the whole ‘ohana.

As the day wears on, the goats continue to go about their business, from napping in the sun to playing with their fellow goats, and it’s steady work, indeed. In the late afternoon, they gather back at the barn for their evening meal, followed by another round of milking. Then it’s off to bed for a good night’s sleep, as they rest up and prepare to do it all over again the next day.

For the team at Surfing Goat Dairy, caring for the goats is a true labor of love. We work tirelessly to ensure that the goats are healthy, happy, and well-fed, and they take great pride in the quality of the milk and cheese that the goats produce. Whether you’re a fan of goat cheese or simply love spending time with these fascinating creatures, a visit to Surfing Goat Dairy is an unforgettable experience that you won’t want to miss, so be sure to sign up for one of our farm tours on your next Upcountry excursion!
